In your role as Research Scientist - Biodiversity Genomics, you will contribute to the Environomics FSP project ‘Harnessing the versatility of target capture for natural resource management’ which aims at developing an enhanced target capture platform for applications at shallow taxonomic levels (species, populations). As the successful applicant, you will work collaboratively with experimental research scientists and technical staff from the Australian National Herbarium, Australian Tropical Herbarium and Australian National Insect Collections.

Your duties will include:

  • Draw on professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines, and research experience to recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with scientific colleagues across various disciplines.
  • Undertake experimental and/or observational research activities and supervise/train others to ensure experiments are established in accordance with the research design.
  • Present results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for clients, and/or write scientific papers for publication.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.
  • Communicate openly, effectively, and respectfully with all staff, clients, and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration, and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.

Salary: AU$102,724 to AU$ $111,165 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: 30 September 2025 - Part-time at 37.35 hours/ftn

To be considered you will need:

Essential:

  • A doctorate or equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area such as molecular genetics, computer science, or bioinformatics.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex genomic datasets and develop analytical pipelines, novel software and/or bioinformatics tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently process large genomic data sets on High Performance Computing (HPC) resources.
  • Proficiency in programming (e.g., R, Python, bash) for bioinformatics
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
  • A solid history of publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, or grant applications.
  • Proven high-level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent research effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to work with a high degree of autonomy.

Desirable:

  • Experience in target capture bait design and bioinformatic analysis of target capture datasets.
  • Experience in relevant fields such as phylogenetics, population genetics, barcoding, systematics and taxonomy, and/or environmental genomics.
  • Experience in biological collections-based research.

Eligibility
